Meaning of Shaligram

Etymologically, the word Shaligrama is derived from the word Shali, which means God; hence the abode Grama of God came to be known as Shaligrama.

What is the Shaligram stone?

Shaligrama are sacred stones that represent Lord Vishnu in an abstract form. They are characterized by markings resembling and representing the Sudarshan Chakra, which is held by Lord Vishnu's index finger.

Where is Shaligram found?

Shaligram is a holy stone discovered naturally in the Himalayan stream of the Gandaki river in Nepal's Muktinath region.

The Significance of Shaligram

In the Skanda Purana, Lord Shiva says, "In this mortal realm, I do not accept any of their adoration or reverence who have not worshipped the sacred Shaligram."

Lord Vishnu and Goddess Laxmi make their homes wherever Shaligrama is located. Shaligrama purifies the soul and promotes achievement in all aspects of life.

In Shaligram's worship, no initiation is necessary; there's no exceptional hymnology or particular prayer procedure, nor any requirement for a skilled priest. Shaligram Shila does not require consecration, so never perform aahwahan (invoking or calling upon a deity) or Visarjan (respectfully requesting the deity's departure) on it.

Much as the fire is latent in the wood and pops out when triggered, Vishnu pervades the Shaligram stones and appears when the stone is worshipped.

A Shaligram stone carries on to be worthy of worship even when it's broken, split or cracked. It doesn't lose its auspicious character. Only the discus (Chakra) sign must be present in the stone. Even a Shaligram stone damaged in whatever way won't become unfit for worship. It's not always expressive and sacred. Nothing could possibly be an impediment to his adoration.

Benefit of worshipping Shaligram

As per the Sri Shaligram Shila Stotra, good luck increases. One is blessed with progeny and graced in every aspect by worshipping Shaligrama, which is black and endowed with little chakras.

The beholder's sins will be washed away simply by looking at the Shaligram stone.

Anyone who worships or keeps a shaligram in their home, or bathes the Shaligram and drinks or pours the bathing waters on their head, is cleansed of all sin.

Worshipping the Saligram washes away the most feared sin of Bramahatya (the killing of a Brahmin).

Worshiped in any way will bestow the benefits, and there is no error of any kind. However, the benefits are endless if it is properly honored and all of the small details are paid attention to.

Any religious observance, such as consecration, obsequies, or worship, must be performed in conjunction with a Shaligram.

When a dying person is made to drink some of the water in which the Shaligram stone is bathed, he will be freed from all sins and will reach the heavenly abode of Vishnu.

Shaligram Worship

Shaligram, alongside Tulsi leaves, and conch, placed on a plate, is considered the worthiest.

The person who worships Shaligrama with Tulsi leaves every day and partakes of the same in the lord's holy presence gets the merit of performing crores of yagnas.

Shaligram Shila Puja is incomplete without the leaves of Tulsi. If the leaves of Tulsi are not available, use Tulsi Mala.

Worshipping with articles like milk, curd, ghee, honey, sugar, and panchamrit, and bathing the stone with them, will entitle the devotee to dwell in the celestial realms for hundreds of decades.

One of the best ways to achieve all-around success is to offer Tulsi leaves with each name of Vishnu Sahasranam.

Guidelines for keeping Shaligram at home

If you worship more than one Shaligram Shila, make sure they are all an even number, and you can use one, four, six, eight, or more Shaligram Shilas.

Never place Shaligram Shila directly on the ground.

Never use Akshat (unbroken rice) in the puja of Shaligram.

Daily Puja of Shaligram is a must as it is the dwelling place of Lord Vishnu.
